Dealing with relations between the police and the community.
The first step in dealing with the problem of police abuse is investigation. We must learn and document the different forms of police misconduct, and identify the most serious problem areas. You can help.

Linking to the NYCLU’s Police Abuse Project, which is focused on the New York City Police, LHVCLU is collecting data on the misuse of police power inWestchester, Rockland, Putnam, Orange, Dutchess, Sullivan, and Ulster Counties. Each of these jurisdictions include many police forces. There are County Police, Sheriff’s Offices, City Police, Town Police forces, and Village Police forces, as well as local barracks of the State Police. It is very important, as we gather information, to be able to identify as precisely as possible both the department and the individual responsible for the wrong.
If you have information about inappropriate police conduct, we need to hear from you, and we need the details.
  1. Please contact the LHVCLU office (in writing) at:

    New York Civil Liberties Union
    Lower Hudson Valley Chapter
    297 Knollwood Rd., Suite 217
    White Plains, New York 10607

  2. Mark the envelope: “Special Attention — Linda Berns, Executive Director”.

  3. Include your name, address and phone number so that we can contact you if we need further information.

Your name will not be disclosed to anyone unless you agree to it.

Tell us the date, location, police department, names or shield numbers of officers involved (if you know them — if hields were removed or covered, include that). Give us the name of the person or persons who were the victims of the abuse if you have that information, and a detailed description if you don’t. Then tell us what happened. If you know whether the victim was arrested, or hospitalized, or taken to an emergency room, please tell us about that also. If there are newspaper clippings, even if they have the story completely wrong, please send us copies.
