THE FACES OF LIBERTY
Faces of Liberty is a traveling photo-journal exhibit documenting the cases of New Yorkers who stood tall for their rights and for the principles of civil liberties. Here are the people, young and old, from across the state of New York, who would not let “authority” pull controversial books from their libraries, or tell them to take a sign off their lawn, or “sweep” them up for fingerprinting because of their race. And here are the stories of how those people, with the help of the Civil Liberties Union, vindicated the Constitutional rights of all of us and reminded “authority” that the Bill of Rights is law that applies to everybody.

The cases in the Exhibit that come from the Lower Hudson Valley Chapter are:

Freedom of Speech and the Press:
The right to distribute the Black Panther newspaper in Moun
t Vernon

Freedom from Discrimination:
Hispanic day-laborers in Mount Kisco

The Rights to Privacy and the Due Process of Law:
High School trying to force students to take oaths about their out-of-school conduct
Local Schedule
Exhibits in 2005 were in Putnam, Dutchess, and Westchester County libraries, and in 2006, at Sarah Lawrence and Dutchess Community Colleges, as well as other libraries in Dutchess and Orange Counties. Next year, the exhibit will travel to Sullivan County, Pace Law School in Westchester, and Nanuet Library in Rockland.

We look forward to working with other local libraries next year!
